What Are Wireless G Connectivity Ratings

Wireless G has been around for several years now, and until the last few years has represented the fastest wireless internet connection type available. Wireless G allows for data transfer up to 54 megabits per second to take place, or approximately 50 megabytes per second. While wireless N is the new standard for wireless network connections, wireless G still has a lot going for it.

To begin with, networking cards and routers are backwards compatible. This means that even if you have a wireless N router, you can still connect a wireless G device to it, and vise versa. Additionally, wireless G can usually still provide speeds markedly faster than what internet service providers are offering for connections. So if you have a wireless G router, you may not need to upgrade it.

However, while wireless G connections will work with wireless N equipment, it does not have close to the same range or signal strength. If you own a large home, or live in an area with a lot of signal interference, this can cause wireless G routers to perform slowly or intermittently, especially in comparison to their wireless N counterparts. Wireless G still works, but it is slowly being replaced.
